FILM REVIEW - Men in Black 3 (Spoiler-free)

Directed by: Barry Sonnenfeld
Written by: Etan Cohen, Lowell Cunningham
Starring: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin
Release Year: 2012
Genre: Sci-Fi/Comedy
Certificate: PG

I went to watch the third, and hopefully final, Men in Black film the other day with high expectations, the previous two movies featuring the intergalactic crime-fighting duo with Will Smith playing Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K  had gripping plots, dynamic screenplay and state of the art special effects creating timeless films with enough humour and action to satisfy any audience, resulting in a deserved billion dollar franchise. And Men in Black 3 was no exception.

The storyline is fairly clichéd and unoriginal; without giving anything away the plot revolves around Agent J, played by Will Smith, travelling back in time to 1969 to rescue young Agent K, played convincingly by Josh Brolin, to prevent an armada of planet devouring aliens destroying earth in modern times, a common theme to many sci-fi films including the recent Marvel Avengers Movie.

Despite the predictable nature of the plot, Sonnenfeld manages to revitalise the plot and also create a rather surprising twist right at the end of the film. The dynamic nature of the film combined with the comic book puns and gripping action sequences, including a bike chase involving high-tech unibikes (reminiscent of the single wheeled vehicle used by General Grievous in Star Wars episode 3) chasing the main villain named Boris (Jemaine Clement) who is on a hardcore custom chopper through the streets of New York, results in an entertaining and truly enjoyable film experience.

The acting as usual for the star filled cast was excellent and convincing, thank god as ultimately, it is a professional actor’s job to create a convincing character; it is what they are paid to do, but particular kudos goes to Josh Brolin for his quite frankly epic portrayal of a young Agent K. The on-screen chemistry between Will Smith and Brolin appeared to be the same as the Chemistry between Smith and Tommy Lee-Jones, a feat that required a skilled actor such as Brolin. Brolin further completed the illusion of being a younger Lee- Jones through the manner that he imitated Lee-Jones facial expressions and body language which must have required a great deal of before filming research. My respect also goes out to the makeup department who managed to make the two actors seem uncannily similar, also aiding in the convincing portrayal of a young agent K.

Talking of a star filled cast, when you go to see the film look out for a certain Lady GaGa on the alien watchdog screen and a short but satisfying appearance from Nichole Scherzinger as a biker chick.

I also recommend that you see MIB 3 in 3D as, unusually, the 3D effects have been used to good effect, a relief as most current 3D films really do not make use of the feature. I often noticed audience members flinch as lasers, glass, alien guts and saliva “flew” out of the screen at relevant times.

As with all films, there were a few disappointing points about this final instalment of the Men in Black trilogy. Unlike the previous films, Men in Black 3 lacked the “jump” factor that was common in its predecessors, a feature which I sorely missed.

At times the story seemed to lack continuity and logic, the directors also appeared to have forgotten about the previous explanations they had created for Agent K’s cold nature offering yet another reason, revealed at the end of the feature. Sonnenfeld also appears to have forgotten all about K’s previous wife and his estranged daughter in the final explanation, a disappointing continuity error for MIB fans.

However, the comedy quips, intense action sequences, engaging emotions and fabulous 3D effects have more than compensated for these minor blemishes on yet another good MIB film.

Therefore, MIB 3 gets a big fat 8 on the crashometer, a film that I recommend to you all.

8/10

FILM NEWS - New Trailers for Les Miserables & The Bourne Legacy, East End Film Festival Programme Revealed and Superhero Updates!

Happy Thursday ladies and gents! Here's the last seven days of all things movie in one post. Enjoy:

First Look At Les Miserables and The Bourne Legacy
Last Thursday we finally got our first look at the film adaptation of the famous musical when Universal Pictures released a teaser trailer. Personally, I'm not sure what to expect from this film, Wolverine isn't exactly a renowned singer after all. But it is directed by Tom Hooper (The King's Speech), so the film certainly has a lot of potential. AAH! I'm in two minds.

The next day on Friday, Universal Pictures released their first trailer for The Bourne Legacy.
Writer and Director Tony Gilroy continues the Bourne saga in this new film based in the universe of the original Robert Ludlum novels. Jeremey Renner (aka Hawkeye from Avengers Assemble) takes the lead in the new film as CIA agent Aaron Cross, replacing Matt Damon's Jason Bourne. The trailer for the fourth installment in the series was released on Friday.

East End Film Festival 2012 Announces Programme
On Thursday, the East End Film Festival announced it's programme for the event which runs from the 3rd to the 8th of July. The Festival will feature a huge collection of shorts from all genres of movie, and will also include a film of Amy Winehouse made from rarely-seen concert and archive footage.
Tickets for the festival are now on sale.
Click here to visit the festival website.

Warner Bros. Plans Justice League Film
Unsurprisingly, after the success of Avengers Assemble, Warner Bros. have made plans to bring the DC equivalent to the big screen. Justice League will be written by Will Beal (Gangster Squad) and is likely to feature superheroes such as Batman, Superman and Wonderwoman.
As Marvel have proven, a universe has to be built up before the final Justice League film can be made. Does this mean that the Batman franchise has to be rebooted again, as Christopher Nolan has hinted that the Dark Knight saga will have a very final ending when the final installment comes out in a few weeks? Maybe the new Superman film Man of Steel will lay down the foundations for a Justice League world? We'll keep you posted as soon as we know more.

Iron Man 3 To Be Co-Produced In China
More superhero news! It was announced yesterday that Iron Man 3 would be co-produced in China. I doubt this makes any difference at all to the film, but I thought I may as well put the news in anyways.

And that's all the film news from the last week. Kieron will be writing it next week. Later today we will also be posting a review of MiB3, written by a friend of ours. See you then.

GAME NEWS - E3 Days 1&2

E3 has begun! So here is a run down of all the latest news from the first 2 days of the biggest electronic entertainment expo, in LA!!! Okay so sorry there is sooo much happening if you want to see EVERYTHING go here:
G4 Day One Wrap Up
G4 Day Two Wrap Up

Okay so I'm going to talk about the stuff that interests me the most:
Ubisoft
I would say Ubisoft is stealing the show with their games, the best being:
Assassins Creed 3:
This is the third setting and of what I think is possibly the best collection of games ever. A new trailer and gameplay footage was released and it looks as if  it is set to be the best game of the trilogy. Also announced is a PS Vita spin off called Assassins Creed Liberation with a female assassin from New Orleans which is good except no one has a PS Vita because everything is a massive rip off on it. Click here for trailer and here for demo.
Far Cry 3:
A first person adventure shooter game set on an island with an amazing and engaging story line. Looks epic as well with a really nice setting and game play. All the trailers for this game really get the heart pumping. Click here for Trailer and Demo.
Splinter Cell: Blacklist:
As far as I can see this is just a modern day assassins creed which from my point of view is really good idea and looks super fab. I especially like the stealth theme and the array of gadgets and gizmos he has. I like the slow motion shooting thing. Trailer and Demo.
Watch Dogs:
Some people say this is the best game that is going to be shown at E3. You are an assassin hacker dude, who has the power to listen to peoples phones and basically everything. In the demo he scrambles phones to distract guards, changes traffic lights to cause a large car crash then escapes by driving over a bridge he makes rise behind him. This also has cool slow motion shooting. This only has a Demo.

Naughty Dog
The Last of Us E3 The Last of Us E3 gameplay trailer revealedA company I really like however only ever does trilogies, they are responsible for some of my favourite games, now they are bringing out a new franchise:
The Last Of Us:
Again another beautiful game from naughty dog. The game is set in the future where everyone has died and they are the last people alive and and it seems every one wants to kill them. The game adds reality by adding a need for supply and no health regeneration. It looks really good. watch the demo.

Square Enix
The creators of OK games. However their new game looks to be better and hopefully able to compete with the other companies.
Hitman Absolution:
The game is about agent 47 and is a third person shooter. However weirdly from the trailer the people he seems to be shooting are really sexy assassin nuns, which makes no sense. Game play and the trailer looks really nice though. Watch the trailer here.

Sony
Beyond: Two Souls
This is more just an action thriller movie that you interact with however you do get to control the characters which is cool. So as you can expect it looks really nice. It stars Oscar nominee Ellen Page voice acting and character modelling. Click here for trailer.

And that is what I'm most interested in other nice announcements are Crysis 3, A new Star Wars game that looks better, Halo 4 ( but I don't have an X-Box) :(, fifa 13 ,playstation all stars battle royal, God of War Ascension, Dead Space 3, Pikman 3 (really good for wii), Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo land and so much more.

In new platform news: Sony has a new thing called wonder book, combined wit augmented reality it makes story's come to life, an example of this is a new harry potter game that has various spells in it or something. Nintendo has a its new WiiU its game pad looks really nice and has many good things that it can do to add to games like nothing has before, they also announced a pro controller for cross platform games and they also announced the miiverse a social networking while playing any Nintendo console and phones. They are trying to get a wider range of people with these new fetaures with more hard core gamers to play games such as Batman Arkham City: Armoured edition to fitness games that can connect with fitness meters. Other epic games for this include: Lego City undercover ( described a GTA in lego form) and ZombiU which makes excellent use of the Game pad and Just Dance 4.

I haven't even touched on the 3DS and lots of other stuff and E3 hasn't even finished yet!

MUSIC REVIEW - The John Coltrane Quartet Plays

-
Artist: John Coltrane
Genre: Jazz
Release Year: 1965 (re-release 2009)
Label: Impulse!

Like all people who love jazz and have their head screwed on right, I think of John Coltrane as no less than a legend. With the ability to compose the likes of Giant Steps and the imagination to convert My Favourite Things into a jazz anthem, he deserves no greater compliment. So naturally I was very excited about buying my first of his albums.

It's the biggest man-made disaster since global warming.

From the opening track, I was expecting another Favourite Things; a traditional musical number turned into a stylish jazz waltz. There is nothing stylish about this car-crash. Coltrane squeals his way through it like a pig that's been force-fed a bacon sandwich, and Elvin Jones sounds as if he was taught to play the drums through anger-management lessons. Chim Chim Cheree is a disaster.

But I guess McCoy Tyner deserves credit for learning to play the piano...with his face.

Maybe Song of Praise can redeem the album? Maybe Coltrane will play more tunefully on his usual saxophone, the tenor? The opening holds promise, the lilting melody holds your attention. Then I think Coltrane's music fell off the stand, and I hit the skip track button, imagining the blood dripping from Tyner's broken nose.

Nature Boy follows the same pattern, a beautifully played cadenza at the beginning, which belly-flops.

I didn't even bother listening to the last track.

1/10

Buy "The John Coltrane Quartet Plays" on amazon.co.uk.

So there's my view on this classic jazz album. If you've heard it, tell us what you think in the comments below.
And that's Crash Hub fill for today. Tomorrow is TV day, and I'll have all the most recent news for you, including the announcement of a new cop drama starring David Tennant. See you then

MUSIC NEWS - Queen Extravaganza Opens, Marina and the Diamonds & Coldplay Release New Videos and Jubilee Concert Tonight

Hello all! Here's all the latest music news from the last seven days wrapped up for you in one post. Enjoy...

'Queen Extravaganza' Is A Kinda Magic
A new tribute concert to the classic rock band Queen started it's tour of North America on Wednesday in Canada. 'The Queen Extravaganza' (which was produced by original Queen drummer, Roger Taylor) aims to recreate the sound of the original band using new musical talent. And judging by reviews, they have certainly succeeded. The National Post said "Freddie Mercury was giving them a thumbs up from heaven" and Billboard.com summarised with "sounded magnificent".
For more on this story, click here.

New Videos From Marina and the Diamonds and Coldplay
On Thursday, Marina and the Diamonds released the music video for their upcoming single "Power and Control". In my opinion, neither the video nor the song are anything special, just more commercial music to fill a gap in the market.
The single, which is from the No. 1 album "Electra Heart", will be released on the 9th of July.

And yesterday Coldplay released their new single and video for "Princess of China" featuring Rihanna. It was released a day earlier than expected after a leaked version was set loose on the internet the day before. Personally, I don't think the song is particularly great, especially after the last two singles released by the band, "Charlie Brown" and "Paradise", which have been fantastic. However, I think the video is very fun and imaginative.
The single is from Coldplay's most recent album Mylo Xyloto.

Aerosmith Tease New Video
Yesterday Aerosmith posted a teaser on Youtube for the video of their new single "Legendary Child". The video is scheduled to be released next week. It will be the first Areosmith music video in eight years!
We will have the final video right here for you next week.

Happy Birthday!
Tuesday 29th May - Noel Gallgher (aged 45)
Friday 1st June - Ronnie Wood (aged 65)
Monday 4th June - Rumer (aged 33)

TONIGHT - The Diamond Jubilee Concert
Just in case you have been living in a hole the last few months, this bank holiday weekend marks the Diamond Jubilee. And the Queen is celebrating in style, with a massive concert being held outside Buckingham palace tonight. The concert will feature an impressive line-up, and JLS.
The Concert is on BBC1, tonight, at 7:30.
For more about the concert, visit the official website here.

So that's your fill on all the most recent music news. What do you think about the videos from Marina and the Diamonds and Coldplay? And how about that teaser from Aerosmith? Who's looking forward to the Diamond Jubilee Concert tonight? Let us know your thoughts in the comments

THE CRUNCH - Windows 8 Preview

The Crunch is thing that we do on Fridays where we talk about stuff that is interesting but doesn't fit the pattern:
Windows 8 is the next operating system made by windows even though it is the 10th they have made!!! "So why is it called Windows 8?" I hear you ask. Well this is because some of them were so terrible they would just prefer they never existed. And yes worst then Vista, they included that one! So hopefully Windows 8 will be good although first impressions are "urg horrible rectangles" and "that is a really dull logo" (see above). So yeah, it is a big change and in my view the colour scheme and graphics look horrible, it is what would be made by a GCSE IT (of which I sat an exam today, it went well, thanks for asking) student, blindfolded. However it does work practically, Windows 8 will boot up faster then you can say, "Why is there no start button?". Yes that fast, I mean no loading at all, none, from no power.

Its insane.

Also once on the desktop it looks the same as Windows 7 except with some really cool new features in the documents and task manager.

Now it is designed mainly for a tablet so the apps on the main blocky start menu don't work that well on the desktop but all the features and design look perfect for a tablet, really easy and simple to use. I mentioned that there is no start button, that is because the blocky thing is the start menu and I personally like the layout and I think the blocks and the colours I will begin to like, probably it is just change I don't like. It has some nice features such as uninstalling an application straight from the menu, no need to go through control panel.

So word is it will be releasing sometime in October this year and I kinda like it, hopefully it wont end up with the same jokes that vista got ("We're going to die" for example from Moss in the IT crowd for example). In the mean time you can download this preview or watch their release video at this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/release-preview

So that was today's "Crunch", tell us what you think in the comments.
And check back on Monday when Tom will be giving you the latest news in the world of music.
